On June 4-6, 2003 the Volyn UABDP Center was visited by Dr. Wladimir Wertelecki (Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program Director, Chair of the University of South Alabama Department of Medical Genetics (Mobil, Al), secretary-treasurer of the World Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects), Prof. Ihor Barylyak (Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects President), Dr. Kenneth Jones (Professor of Pediatrics, Chair of the Dysmorphology and Teratology Department of the University of California Medical School (San Diego, Ca), Dr. Christina Chambers - epidemiologist, Departments of Pediatrics and Family and Preventive Medicine of the University of California (San Diego, Ca), Dr. Andrew Hull - obstetrician and gynecologist with specialization in medicine of the fetus and mother of the University of California (San Diego, Ca).

During the visit they performed the following activities:

  1. Dr. K. Jones conducted trainings on FAS diagnosis in newborns (examination, diagnosis, taking and storing pictures) for geneticists and neonatologists of the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center, for neonatologists from Volodymyr-Volynsky, Kovel, Kamin-Kashyrsky, Horohiv, Lyuboml rayons, Novovolynsk and Lutsk Delivery Hospitals and Lutsk Orphanage, geneticists and neonatologists from Khmelnytsky Oblast. Total number of trainees was 20.

  1. Dr. A. Hull inspected ultrasound equipment, standard procedures and the abilities of ultrasound data archiving in 2D and 3D regimes and methods of standard ultrasound examination of pregnant women in 2D regime in the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center (VRCTMC) and in Lutsk Delivery Hospital. Then he conducted trainings on methods of pregnant women examination in the context of the proposed FAS Study and Prevention Pilot Project for ultrasound specialists of the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center, Lutsk Delivery Hospital, Khmelnytsky and Kherson Oblasts. The amount of participants was 10 persons.

  1. Dr. Ch. Chambers conducted trainings for doctors who see and select pregnant women into the high risk group because of alcohol usage during their pregnancy. The subject of the first training was "Principles of General and Specific Screening at Antenatal Clinics". Chief obstetrician-gynecologist of the Volyn Health Care Administration, chief doctor of the Regional Narcological Dispensary, regional obstetrician-gynecologists, pediatricians and experts in narcology from Volodymyr-Volynsky, Kovel, Kamin-Kashyrsky, Horohiv, Lyuboml rayons, Novovolynsk, obstetricians-gynecologists of the Regional Family Planning Center, the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center, Lutsk Antenatal Clinic and Khmelnytsky Oblast took part in the training. General amount of the trainees was 47 persons. The second training was devoted to the subject of screening and questionnaire design with a stress on the protocol of the pilot study (selection of subjects for the study, consultation, data collection and registration). In the training participated 4 doctors (VRCTMC - 1 person, Regional Antenatal Clinic - 1 person, Khmelnytsky Delivery Hospital - 2 persons), which were selected as coordinators in the course of FAS Study and Prevention Pilot Project.

Besides trainings and meetings there was hold a round table discussion, which was devoted to the educational role of the UABDP Informational-Resource OMNI-centers. Deputy chief of the Volyn Regional Health Care Administration Dr. H. Mikulska, Chief Obstetrician-Gynecologist of the Volyn Regional Health Care Administration Dr. A. Vdovychenko, professor of Lviv State Medical University Dr. Yu. Korzhynsky, General Director of the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center Dr. H. Vashchylin, Dean of the Volyn branch of Post-Diploma Education Department of the Lviv State Medical University Dr. V. Doretsky, Scientific Vice Pro-Rector of the Volyn State University named after Lesya Ukrayinka Mrs. M. Kratko, Director of the Volyn Regional Scientific Medical Library Mr. V. Sokolyuk, Head of Scientific-Medical Information Department of the Volyn Regional Scientific Medical Library Mrs. N. Yashchyk, Head of Bibliography Department of the Volyn Regional Scientific Medical Library Mrs. O. Baturynska, representative of the Volyn Foundation "Saving Child's Life" Mrs. L. Hahalovska, representatives of the Volyn local TV participated at the round-table. The discussion led to the proposition to create a Board in each OMNI-Center to facilitate the process of improvement of accumulated by the OMNI-Centers information usage as well as integration of OMNI-Centers into the existing in Ukraine informational system. The Board will consist of representatives of local authorities, medical and informational professionals, educational institutions, parents of BD children.
