The seminar was organized by the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program. The Seminar was hosted by the Institute for Occupational Health of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy".

The goals of the Seminar were:

  • Present epidemiology of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
  • Study the clinical issues of the maternal alcohol consumption effect on the child.
  • Present the Teratological Information Systems.
  • Review of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome cases.
  • Show the preliminary assessment of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program.
  • Present OMNI-Center Network of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program.
  • Overview of the Neonate Register database in on-line regime.

Among the international specialists there were Dr. W. Wertelecki (UABDP Director, University of South Alabama, USA), Drs. K. Jones and Ch. Chambers (University of California, San Diego, USA).

The Seminar was greeted by Dr. Yuri Kundiev (Vice-President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Director of the Institute for Occupational Medicine) who also presented overview of alcohol drinking in Ukraine.

On February 5 there were presented the following reports:

  1. Overview of alcohol drinking in Ukraine by Dr. Yuri Kundiev, Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine,Vice-President; Institute for Occupational Health, Director.
  2. Epidemiology of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome by Dr. Christina Chambers, University of California, San Diego, USA.
  3. Studies on clinical issues of the maternal alcohol consumption effect on child by Dr. Kenneth L. Jones, University of California, San Diego, USA.
  4. Report on FAS effect on newborns in Crimea Republic, Kherson, Rivne, Volyn oblasts, and Kyiv by Dr. N. Afanasiyeva, Chief Medical Genetics Specialist, Ministry of Health of Crimea; Dr. N. Marchenko, Kherson Regional Health Care State Administration, Deputy Head; Dr. L. Yevtushok, Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program, Medical Director, Chief Medical Geneticist for Rivne oblast; Dr. N. Yuskiv, Chief Medical Geneticist for Volyn oblast; Dr. H. Skyban, Chief-Physician of Children Out-patient Clinic, Kyiv Institute for Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  5. Preliminary assessment of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program by Dr. W. Wertelecki, UABDP Director.

On February 6, the 2nd day of the Seminar, Dr. K. Jones delivered a presentation "Teratological Information Systems". International group of the experts reviewed the FAS cases presented by medical geneticists participating in the seminar. During the evening session there was OMNI-Center presentation for the participants interested in computer-based resources made by S. Lapchenko, UABDP Information Director and O. Kotliar, Kyiv OMNI-Center information specialist.

123 participants took part in the seminar. Among them there were Dr. Halyna Mykhaylova (Deputy Minister, Ministry of Health, Crimea), Dr. Vyacheslav Taran (Head, Oblast Health Care Administration, Khmelnytsky), chiefs of mother and child health care from Rivne and Kherson oblasts, heads, assistant professors and lecturers of neonatology and medical genetic departments of Kyiv and Lviv Medical Universities, scholars from the institutes of the Academy of Medical Sciences, medical geneticists and neonatologists from the oblasts who work within UABDP, students of Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.
