Drugs in Pregnancy: Information and Misinformation Practical Review of Risks

A review by Dr. G Koren et al. of 21 drugs with proven teratogenic effects in humans (N. Eng. J. Med., 338: 1128, 1998), provides a practical and authoritative resource for specialists to share with primary health care providers. The authors also provide useful views on counseling women about teratogenic risks and a list of drugs that can be used safely during pregnancy.

Promoting understanding of risks associated with fetal exposures with teratogens and addressing risks engendered by limited information or misinformation can prevent unnecessary abortions or avoid unnecessary therapies.
