Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program
The Non-Governmental Organization for the Parents Who Have Children With Neural Tube Defects Has Been Established
The inaugural meeting of parents, who have children with neural tube defects, took place on January 25 in Kyiv at the Information and Resource Center (OMNI-Center) of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program (UABDP). It was held under the support of the UABDP and the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects (Alliance). The parents, who took part in this meeting, have expressed their will to make their efforts for rehabilitation of the children with neural tube defects. Dr. Ihor Baryliak, President of the Alliance, and Dr. Iryna Kharytonova, Liaison for the Alliance, have been invited to take part in this meeting as well.
Dr. Ihor Baryliak reported about the Alliance's activities. He emphasized the necessity of the NTD prevention by preconception intake of folic acid, and folic acid flour fortification. Dr. Iryna Kharytonova stressed the importance of the parental support groups and organizations formation under the aegis of the Alliance. She also reported about the OMNI-Centers network activities (Crimea, Kherson, Khmelnytsky, Kyiv, Lutsk, Rivne). The information materials regarding NTD prevention, that had been worked out at the UABDP's OMNI-Centers, were distributed.

Mr. Andriy Yuryshynets was elected the Head of the Organization. The Initiative Group was set up. It is responsible for preparing necessary for the organization incorporation papers.
The organization for parents who have children with neural tube defects welcomes all parents who have children with the same problems to join it. Everybody who advocates the future children to be born healthy is welcomed as well. The Organization considers birth defects prevention one of the priorities of its future activities. It has strong intention to collaborate closely with the Alliance in this issue.
