Dear Ms. Schmidt:

I am glad to inform you that the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program (UABDP) sponsored by USAID is working successfully in the Volyn oblast. On June 16, 2001 the President of Ukraine Mr. Leonid D. Kuchma was informed of the Program activities during his visit to the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center where he laid the foundation stone in the basement of future Volyn Perinatal Center.

The President greatly appreciated the UABDP activities. He paid considerable attention to the possibility of the folic acid fortification in Ukraine. The President was provided with materials that he was going to study and evaluate in the view of the forthcoming UN Special Session on Children.

We hope that our cooperation will continue.
