On September 28-29, 1999 the next scheduled working meeting of all participants of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program took place in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (city of Kyiv).

Among the participants were Volyn and Rivne Birth Defects Program team, Prof. W. Wertelecki (Director of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program), Prof I. Barylyak (Scientific Director of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program), H. Vashchylin (Director of the Ukrainian-American Health Center), I. Kharytonova (Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program Liaison), and Dr. L. Edmonds (CDC, Atlanta, USA).

They discussed the results of preparatory work to create a birth defects surveillance system in Volyn and Rivne regions, the first results of work with surveillance forms. They also studied the photos of children with birth defects in both regions. It was noted, that in Volyn region alone during last 2 months there were diagnosed 19 cases of different BD in newborns, among them 2 with Spina Bifida.

Dr. L. Edmonds noted that unique cooperation of geneticists and neonatologists is making it possible to create a Register of all newborns, and to conduct high-quality monitoring of birth defects with results that can be trusted. He also pointed the possibility of errors and omissions which could occur.

Each member of the Program had an opportunity to tell about the work which has been done and to present proposals concerning a birth defects surveillance organization, and creating a Register of all newborns in Volyn and Rivne regions.

During the meeting it was agreed to make some corrections in forms used. There was discussion also about the technical procedures of transmitting the forms and information about children from rayons to the Program officers in Lutsk and Rivne.
